Játéktér (Playing Area / Spațiul de Joc) is a Hungarian-language theatre journal based in Transylvania, Romania — the only periodical of its kind dedicated to professional theatre theory and practice in the region. We operate at the crossroads of Romanian and Hungarian culture, bringing together theatre-makers, scholars, critics, and writers from both traditions. Our pages make room for performance reviews, theatre history, critical theory, and international perspectives, addressed in language that is rigorous yet accessible to anyone who cares about the stage.
Beyond the printed quarterly, Játéktér runs a continuously updated online portal (jatekter.ro) and functions as an active cultural platform: we have organised workshops, mentoring programmes, international symposia, and residency camps exploring the boundaries of theatre, dance, performance, and political art. Since 2012, we have been building the critical infrastructure that Transylvanian Hungarian theatre deserves.
